Sanjaya Malakar: The Idol Battle
1-Apr-2007
Written by: Courtney Thompson

Simon Cowell is threatening to quit “Idol“ if votefortheworst.com’s ploy works.

A civil war of sorts is raging in the U.S. in the name of American Idol’s Sanjaya Malakar. One side says he and his pony-tailed faux hawk needs to be off the show. This is a singing competition and Malakar houses no talent. The other end of the spectrum says Malakar is the most entertaining thing that has happened to Idol and he must stay.

“VotefortheWorst.com encourages you to call in and vote for Sanjaya Malakar. Hula your way into our hearts and make us proud,” proclaims that VFTW banner on its homepage. The site’s sole purpose is to anger the producers of American Idol. According to the Web site’s mission statement, American Idol is hypocritical. The creators of the site claim that American Idol is nothing more than reality television in which the audience is encouraged to poke fun at bad singers who audition. This brings up the ratings. VotefortheWorst.com wants to ensure that this form of a guilty pleasure plays out until the show’s season finale. They want to make sure Malakar gets as far as possible by sending in mass votes. The site even caught the attention of shock jock Howard Stern, who supports the cause.

Idol judge, Simon Cowell, won’t stand for it. Cowell promises he’ll leave the show if Malakar reigns victorious. “He’s not going to win,” said Cowell. “I won’t be back if he does!” Fans of the show are also striking back. A 23-year-old woman, who goes by the name of J, created a Youtube video proclaiming that she is going on a hunger strike until Malakar, “is either voted off, producers rescind his spot in the top 12, or he graciously steps down from his position.” J also created a MySpace page called Starvation for Sanjaya. She documents that she has lost 10 pounds in a little over a week.

Both sides have received scathing replies to their actions. Many fans e-mailed VFTW to say how they are potentially sabotaging a better singer’s career while others have made replied videos to J and left comments on her page telling her that her hunger strike is only fueling votes for Sanjaya and that sacrificing her health for a television show is ludicrous.

The only way the war will end is by the season finale of American Idol. Both sides are clearly out for blood.
