Country Singer Shaver to Be Arrested
There is a warrant out for Billy Joe Shaver's arrest for allegedly shooting a man in the cheek in a Papa Joe's Texas Saloon parking lot on Saturday night.
The victim is being treated at a nearby hospital and is reportedly responsive and talking to doctors, but Shaver is expected to be charged with second-degree assault with a deadly weapon and unlawfully carrying a handgun on the premises of a building licensed to sell alcohol. Both are felonies, with fines over $10,000 and jail time. Police are still investigating what caused the shooting.
Joseph A. Turner, Shaver's attorney, said that a belligerent man came up to Shaver with a knife and Shaver shot him in self-defense. When Turner attempted to bring Shaver to the police station, officers would not arrest him because there was no warrant yet.
"At this time, no charges have been filed and Billy Joe is expected to honor all scheduled concert performances and his promotional schedule for his new album release, Billy Joe Shaver's Greatest Hits," said Music World Entertainment president, Matthew Knowles.
