The Boss Makes Surprise Appearance at Tribute
7-Apr-2007
Written by: Courtney Thompson
At the Music for Youth Benefit, Bruce Springsteen showed up to perform two songs.
Those who bought tickets for the Bruce Springsteen tribute definitely got their money’s worth: The Boss himself showed up to give a performance.
Springsteen said it was “lovely and harrowing” to have so many artists performing his work. He broke out the harmonica and acoustic guitar to play “The Promised Land,” followed by “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight),” which he invited all the performers to help him finish the song. He also offered comic relief: “The good news is...I’m not dead yet,” he told the crowd.
The concert, held at Carnegie Hall, Thursday night, was a benefit for Music for Youth, which supports students getting musical education in inner-city schools. Twenty artists paid tribute to Springsteen, including Patti Smith, who performed “Because the Night,” The Bacon Brothers, giving their rendition of “Streets of Philadelphia,” and Odetta, performing “57 Channels.” The event raised about $100,000.
