Profiles in History auction sold over 700 items on Thursday.
A Superman leotard, worn by actor Christopher Reeve in the 1978 movie, sold well over its estimated price range of $50,000 to $70,000 dollars, at a whopping $115,000 at an auction on Thursday held by Profiles in History, a Hollywood memorabilia firm. This spike in value may be credited to the popularity of the present day Superman films.
A rare Winkie costume from the beloved 1939 movie, The Wizard of Oz, sold for the same amount, but was in its price range of $100,000 to $120,000. It was worn by an actor who played one of the guards protecting the Wicked Witch’s castle.
The biggest money maker, however, was a creature costume from 1979's Alien, which went for $126,500.
More than 700 items were sold at the auction including Val Kilmer’s Batman costume ($63,000), Marilyn Monroe’s personal script from The Seven Year Itch ($69,000) and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine claws from X2: X-Men United ($40,250).
