New York Islanders Capture Final Playoff Spot
8-Apr-2007
Written by: Jonathan Napolitano

Islanders make playoffs after shoot-out win against the New Jersey Devils.

With a game that was much needed for the New York Islanders to make the playoffs, they’re now heading to the big show after successfully beating the New Jersey Devils 3-2 in shoot-out fashion.

It was the Islanders' Richard Park who scored the first goal of the game, 11:53 into the first period. With Park's goal, the Islanders held the Devils to only 3 shots in the opening period, while killing off a Devils power play as well.

The second period was a better one for the Devils, but certainly not good enough to get themselves on the board. The Devils had 9 shots and killed off two New York Islanders power plays, keeping it a one goal game after two periods.

Early into the third period though, Richard Park struck again, snapping a shot into the top corner of the net, giving the Islanders a 2-0 lead with 13:09 left in the game.

However, after two unsuccessful Devils power plays, New Jersey’s John Madden ended up finding the back of the net, 15:47 into the third period. But Madden wasn’t done, with a second left in the game, Madden popped the puck over a scrolling Islanders goal tender, Wade Dubielewicz, to send the game into overtime.

After no scoring in overtime, the game was decided in a shootout. The Islanders' Miroslav Satan scored the first goal, but was quickly followed by a goal from New Jersey’s Zach Parise to tie the shoot-out up 1-1. But it was the Islanders' Victor Kozlov who scored the game winner and got the puck past Devils goal tender, Scott Clemmenson.

The Islanders are set to face off against the NHL’s best team of the regular season, the Buffalo Sabres, in the first round of the playoffs. Playoffs are scheduled to begin later on this week.
