Radio Host Apologizes for Racial Slur
On his nationally syndicated talk show, Monday morning, radio host Don Imus has apologized for racially controversial comments that he made about the Rutgers University women's basketball team. Imus created a stir with his description of the team as "nappy-headed hos." Imus has responded by saying that the comment was made in jest, but also says that he will not excuse his actions. "Here's what I've learned," Imus said. "You can't make fun of everybody, because some people don't deserve it."
Mr. Imus also wants people to know that he is not a "white man who doesn't know any African-Americans." He points out that 10 percent of the kids who attend the Imus Ranch cattle farm, for children with blood disorders and cancer, are black.
The radio host has expressed a wish to meet the Rutgers players and their parents and coaches, and also says that he's grateful for the opportunity to appear on the Rev. Al Sharpton's radio show. Rev. Sharpton has called for Imus' dismissal. Rev. Jesse Jackson has also called for a protest in Chicago, and an official of the NAACP is calling for a resignation or a firing.
