Apple Corps. settles long-running dispute with music label.
EMI has settled its dispute over royalties with Apple Corps, the publishing group founded by The Beatles. The British music label has released a statement saying, “We have reached a mutually acceptable settlement,” adding that they would not reveal anything more. They then shared that the label was working toward a goal of getting the band’s songs on Apple Inc.’s iTunes website. It is hoped that the settlement could pave the road to enabling legal downloads of Beatles’ hits.
As of now, superhits from the band, such as “Hey Jude,” “Let it Be,” and “Come Together,” are not available for legal download. This is at the band’s insistence. Apple Corps is owned by the surviving Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as the widows of John Lennon and George Harrison. The publishing group has contended that the music label EMI owed a hefty sum in missing royalties—some £30 million—from album sales between 1994 and 1999. Legal action was started in 2005 to recover the money.
