Radio Host Fired for Racist Comment
12-Apr-2007

Don Imus, former host of “Imus in the Morning Show,“ fired after offensive comment about Rutgers University Women’s Basketball Team.
Just a few days after referring to the players on the Rutgers University Women’s Basketball team as “nappy-headed hos,” a statement that caused public shock and a reconsideration of the climate of race relations today in America, radio host Don Imus was fired by CBS Radio. The network, which at first said that they would suspend Imus for two weeks before deciding on the next step to be taken, chose to discontinue the popular program, Imus in the Morning Show, due to the controversial remarks. “CBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves said, “From the outset, I believe all of us have been deeply upset and revulsed by the statements that were made on our air about the young women who represented Rutgers University.”
Though Imus said that he would apologize to the team for his remarks, team captain Essence Carson said that the comment “stole [the team’s] moment of joy.” Reverend Al Sharpton became involved with the issue, meeting with CBS executives to demand that Imus be fired. Even Democratic presidential contender, Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, had commented on Imus’s statement, claiming before Imus’s official firing that he would never again appear on the show.
