Ethical Einstein

Written by: Jeannine Coppola
Biographer claims physicist’s religious beliefs shaped his theories.
According to ABC news, Walter Isaacson, biographer of Ben Franklin and Henry Kissinger, claims Einstein struggled with God, in his new book, Einstein: His Life and Universe.
Contrary to many people's belief, Isaacson states that Einstein, arguably the greatest scientist of the 20th century, was not an atheist. At a dinner party, Einstein once commented, I have a deep feeling of faith, a deep religiosity that comes from my appreciation of the way the Lord made the universe," suprising everybody in the room. He also said he was like a child in a library who recognizes that someone must have written the books and ordered them, giving you a sense of awe and appreciation for an underlying power of organization, which Einstein liked to call "cosmic religion."
Isaacson continues to describe Einstein's theological beliefs as having an impression on his scientific theories. He believed that there are laws of causality and would frequently use the phrase, "Well, God doesn't play dice with the universe," when he would see someone violating these laws. Niels Bohr once responded by saying, "Einstein, quit telling God what to do."
