J.R.R. Tolkien Novel Finished by Son
18-Apr-2007
Written by: Abby Riese
After 30 years of no new publications, J.R.R. Tolkien’s previously unfinished novel hits bookstores.
J.R.R. Tolkien’s son finished the unpublished and unfinished book left by Tolkien after his death in 1973. Tuesday, it was published by Houghton Mifflin, reports the Associated Press.
Tolkien began writing the novel, called The Children of Hurin, 99 years ago, and worked on it sporadically throughout his life.
This book, however, like many of Tolkien’s, is dense and generally unreadable. Some of the few that attempt them are Tolkien scholars and Middle-earth fans, and The Children of Hurin is just the book they have been waiting for.
Tolkien’s son has spent many years of his life editing and combining many different versions to finally produce a readable version.
Christopher Tolkien says he added no new material, but he did occasionally add transitions. But the words, he maintains, are all his father’s.
