NAACP Holds a Funeral?
1-May-2007
Written by: Eboni Munn
July will mark the month that the NAACP will “bury” the N-word.
During their national convention in Detroit, the NAACP will hold a funeral to abolish the derogatory term. Similar to the burying of the Jim Crow laws in 1944, the NAACP sees fit to undergo the same process.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s Detroit Branch president, Rev. Wendell Anthony, says that the time is now right to hold such ceremony. “We’ll have a eulogy, pallbearers and sisters fainting,” Anthony said before the 52nd annual Fight for Freedom Fund dinner held in Detroit, Michigan.
After the firing of Don Imus, Rev. Rivers believes that young adults should be involved with eliminating the derogatory terms that Imus and the Hip-Hop generation use. “If you stop dancing, they’ll stop playing the music. And tell them ‘I’m not your ho. I’m your queen.’"
The NAACP Convention will be held from July 7-12 in Michigan’s Motor City.
