Spider-Man 3 Breaks Box-Office Record
5-May-2007
Written by: Edward Olivier
New arachnid movie now has the biggest box-office debut.
Spider-Man 3 opening day revenue reaches $59 million domestically, debunking the previous record from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which earned $55.8 million in its summer opening.
Sony executives said Saturday that the webbed movie also made an additional $45 million overseas, swinging on a comfortable worldwide revenue of $104 million, another record for the web thrower.
Any further comments from the studio will have to wait until Sunday morning, when they will have access to the full weekend estimates.
Spider-Man 3 had already broken a record when it opened in 4,252 theaters domestically, overcoming the green ogre’s record of opening in 4,163, set by Shrek 2 in 2004.
"That's why they call him the amazing Spider-Man," said Paul Dergarabedian, President of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "Just five years ago, these are numbers we thought we'd never see."
