A film based on Alice Sebold’s bestselling book, The Lovely Bones, will be produced by DreamWorks.
After a week of bidding among studios in Hollywood, Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson found a home for his latest project, a film adaptation of Alice Sebold's bestselling book, The Lovely Bones.
DreamWorks, currently owned by Paramount Pictures, will be partnering up with Jackson and Film 4 to create the picture, a deal they won with a $65 million bid. DreamWorks has been heavily invested in the production of The Lovely Bones ever since they lost out to Jackson a few years ago for the screen rights to Sebold's book.
The book, which is narrated by a young girl after she is murdered by a neighbor of her family, was adapted into a screenplay by Jackson, along with his Lord of the Rings colleagues, Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh. The film will begin shooting in October in New Zealand and Pennsylvania, and is set to be released in 2008.
Says Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks' chief, on the production of the film, "When you read an emotionally magical story that cries out to be turned into a major motion picture, you hope its winding path can find its way to the door of your own company."
