An Exciting Month of Movies
8-May-2007

“Spider-Man,“ “Shrek,“ and “Pirates“
The opening of Spider-Man 3 this past weekend kicked off the beginning of what is certain to be a very lucrative month for the movie industry.
With a total of $151.1 million dollars, Spider-Man broke the opening-weekend record of $135 million set last year by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. It also set records for the biggest opening-day ($59.8 million), Saturday ($51.3 million), and Sunday ($39.9 million). Worldwide, the movie has already grossed $382 million.
Spider-Man completely dominated its competition this weekend, accounting for over 83 percent of the domestic box office. Coming in second place, nearly $100 million behind, was Disturbia.
Hoping to steal some of its thunder next week will be Shrek the Third, starring Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy. Back in 2004, Shrek 2 made $108 million its opening-weekend. This time around, Shrek will most likely surpass that and maybe even the record just set by Spider-Man.
If Shrek the Third doesn’t break the record, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End just might. Pirates is already one of the most successful movie franchises of all time, making nearly $730 million domestically with its first two installments.
Opening at the end of the month on May 25, Pirates will definitely give the movie industry good momentum heading into June, capping off an incredible month that could potentially have three movies open with $100 million weekends.
The rest of the summer will be just as exciting with movies like Knocked Up, Ocean’s Thirteen, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Evan Almighty, Transformers, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Bourne Ultimatum, and Rush Hour 3 all opening.
