More Shock Jocks Fired
Shock jocks are clearly under fire this year. It was announced on Saturday that Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay, hosts of "The Doghouse with JV and Elvis," were fired from CBS Radio.
The show's cancellation comes three weeks after its suspension when the two broadcast a call to a Chinese restaurant where the caller, with an exaggerated accent, order "pork flied lice" and compared menu items to body parts. It was aired shortly after Don Imus' racial and sexist comments.
A re-airing of the segment angered several Asian-American groups and demanded that Vandergrift and Lay suffer the same punishment as Imus.
"This is a victory not only for the Asian-American community, but for all communities who find themselves constant targets of racist and sexist programming," said Jeanette Wang, an executive with the Organization of Chinese Americans, to the Associated Press.
Opponents of the news of the firing caused 100 people to gather at Union Square to rally for Vandergrift, Lay, Imus and other radio personalities.
"It's not about whether you like what you heard or not," said Debbie Wolf, president of People Against Censorship. "I find censorship to be far more offensive than anything that was said."
