Maria Bello to Replace Weisz for "Mummy 3"
Maria Bello will replace Rachel Weisz as Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell for the third installment of The Mummy, according to Variety. Weisz chose not to reprise her role for undisclosed reasons.
Bello will join Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Luke Ford and Michelle Yeoh in the Universal film directed by Rob Cohen.
The sequel will bring the O'Connell family to the forbidden tombs of China and the Himalayas to battle a mummy, a former Chinese emperor, played by Li, who is cursed by a wizard, played by Yeoh. The script was written by Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough. Sean Daniel, Stephen Sommers and Bob Ducsay will be the producers.
The first two Mummy films grossed more than $830 million, with the next installment expected to be released in June.
Bello was seen in Flicka and History of Violence, and will star in The Jane Austen Book Club for Sony and Butterfly on a Wheel for Lionsgate.
