Written by: Allison Zimmer
Spring Awakening, a new rock musical in the vein of Rent, is up for the most awards.
A recent addition to Broadway, Spring Awakening, took the Tony Award nominations by storm on Tuesday, scoring 11 nominations, the most out of the 2006-07 season. The rock musical, created by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, is based on a 19th century German play about teenage eroticism.
Originally opening off-Broadway, the play is now playing at the Great White Way's Eugene O'Neill Theater, its home since December. It has also been nominated for 10 Drama Desk Awards and was named Best Musical by the Outer Critics Circle and New York Drama Critics Circle.
Also up for best musical are Grey Gardens, Curtains, and Mary Poppins. In addition to these popular shows, Legally Blonde: The Musical is up for seven awards, including Best Actress for Laura Bell Bundy.
