Oregon Scientific VR-399
Written by: Michael Mardings
A super-small digital recorder.
How is the Oregon Scientific Voice Recorder?
It is pocket sized and holds 234 minutes of voice recording, just like
the advertisements say. I had my boss Dominick use the recorder for his
recent interview with Ted Nugent.
The conversation we had via AOL IM below probably best illustrates the
recorder.
MM) How was the recorder I got you boss?
DM) I was a bit confused on how to use it at first, but then again I didn't
read the instructions first.
MM) And after you read the instructions.
DM) I had dinner.
MM) Did the recorder work out well?
DM) Yeah, I recorded the interview, uploaded it to the computer, and backed
it up on the CD. Then to transcribe it, I just emailed it over the file
to type up.
MM) Did you like it?
DM) Yeah, I'll use it again. You did good.
MM) Any regrets with it?
DM) I wish the sound quality was a tad bit higher, but I do like the idea that
it really is smaller than a lighter. Then again, I don't smoke, so that
analogy doesn't work too well.
MM) Good.
I used it myself and yes, unless you read the instructions it will take
about ten minutes to figure out, otherwise it will take about five. The
USB link is really easy and I thought the lower sound quality (8kb) was
better for storage reasons, but since Dominick was recording a phone line
it could have used that extra kick of quality.
Hey, it made the boss happy AND he's finally given up his regular tape
recorder, so clearly this is a darn good device and one that I'd recommend
to any assistant editor to get his boss impressed.
Signing out!
