HP Scanjet 4670
It is in my opinion that flat screen panel monitors hit it big; not because of functionality, but purely because of how cool and flat they look. On that basis alone, the HP 4670 vertical scanner should be a break-away success.
It is unlike any scanner that I've ever seen, as it is just as cool and amazing looking as the best of the flat screen monitors. Why am I bringing up a monitor when I'm talking about a scanner? It's the closest comparison. The HP 4670 seems to be first about looks and secondly about functionality, not that the functionality is lost.
It stands upright, and with it's see through panel, allows you to view the documents that you're scanning with relative ease. It has this thin look that really has to be seen to be believed. Beyond the look, it is a space saver as compared to the traditional scanner which takes up most of the desk.
Functionality wise, it packs a punch with quality, but not so much for speed. Compared to other scanners of like cost and quality it's a bit slower, however with that said, it's still a 2400 DPI and 48-bit color. Then again, if you're getting a scanner like this, you're not getting it to scan a few million documents. You're getting it to fit in a tight office and save space. But functionality said, the fact that the panel is removal and can be held over a book or the service, is a step above having to squeeze the book over the scanner.
Overall, it's the best damn scanner I've seen for a small office. It's stylish, slick, and not only works well, but fits in well with a professional look in your office.
