Is it a lava lamp or the perfect tool for calming down?

What do you get when you cross a lava lamp a mood ring and a weather station? The Ambient Beacon is a square lava lamp looking thing which tells you the weather by a color coded system. Just like a mood ring it turns different colors depending on the temperature.

But how does it work? You log onto your computer, enter your serial code, and then set you location. Then the Ambient Beacon receives a satellite signal with you local weather. I've learned that light blue and green means a little chilly. If you'd like, you can set the box to change colors for the Dow Jones index, election results, humidity, or really, nearly anything.

The bad news is that this isn't for an anal retentive weather nut. Maria in the office was quite disturbed that the weather color was light blue and didn't say 58.5 degrees. "No matter how much you stare at the box, it will only look blue. I need numbers."

I, on the other hand, loved the lava lamp like qualities. It's a peaceful sort of glow which does have a tranquil quality about it. Throughout the day it changes and you start to look forward to those weather changes.

Final result? Don't get this if you're anal-retentive about numbers or it will induce panic. However, if you are the type of person who gets dressed based upon what shirt to wear in this weather, it's great. "Oh, its a light sweater day, it 's blue." For a Zen-like ambience it's perfect. Once you realize that the point is to not go nuts on details and data and just relax and get a round-about number, you'll start to feel better.
