Brunton's ATLAS™ GPS
Written by: Donald A. Miserandino

Never get lost again.

Well we're back! Over the past few weekends I have been field-testing a "Global Positioning System". I say field-testing because I had to go into an open ball field to try out this 21st Century compass. OK, I admit it! I can get lost in a baseball field. I usually didn't care to be anywhere without streets and smog. But this Atlas GPS is a different kind of compass. Remember the little hand-held round thing with a red and white arrow that came in cereal boxes? It has now grown up and joined the world of camping cool. For years, I didn't mind carrying the little guy to impress people, but... this is oh soooo cool... and affordable too!

The Atlas GPS is a contemporary compass that is held in the palm of one hand. It is almost the size of a PDA. After a few buttons are pushed, a tiny map on a backlight screen shows up that tells where you are and what direction to travel to get to your destination. The manual is easy to follow and has a "read me first" section that you only have to read halfway through to get the main idea of how to operate the Atlas. The basic logic is somewhat similar to a PDA input so is "feels familiar." The manual even has several action sections that are designed to get you in the woods real fast so you can annoy the squirrels and fish.

The maps are kept up to date with more details and points of interest by an easy-to-purchase add-on module in the SD format covering various regional sections. The only things you need to add are the extra batteries you will need when exploring the Atlas GPS in your backyard. And, by the way, the manual is even online in case you lose it, like I did.

It was dark and raining. What could I do? Besides, I missed my mommy.
