Robosapien
Written by: Michael Mardings
Is it a toy or an adventure into robotics?
Sony has the famous little Aibo robot, and there of course are the full sized robots that can dance, sing and entertain. That said, the costs are still a bit much for the average person. Wow Wee Toys has released Robosapien, which at under $100 is one of the most affordable robotic toys out there.
That said, there is an overwhelming amount of praise and criticism and controversy surrounding this new toy.
First, we'll start with the criticism. The critics complain that the robot isn't really a robot, but a remote controlled robot. You can't program it to take out your garbage or to mow your lawns. They are right about that. Yes, you can program it to follow a few series of steps but, besides moving around and flailing it's arms, it won't do anything functional.
They also complain that for robot enthusiasts it's too childish and for children it's too advanced. Yet again they are right. If you're buying it for a robot, you'll be upset. If you're buying it for your kids, depending on the age, they might get bored.
This all said, it almost seems like somebody needs to relabel the toy and it would do 10 times better. Yes, it's robotic but it doesn't really think much on it's own, which is one of the criteria that people think of when it comes to robots.
Now, if I told you that I had a remote control robot that cost as much as a remote controlled car you might be interested. If I told you that this thing could walk around town and scare the squirrels in your yard, you might perk up your ears.
The problem here is that people are hoping to get a robot that will wash their dishes for less than $100. We're not there yet; however, we do have a toy for a robot-loving kid (or adult) that is a remote controlled little robot.
