Actiontec's Wireless Digital Media Player
Written by: Michael Mardings
Now your TV can turn into the ultimate TiVo and your stereo is the world's largest jukebox.
The Wireless Media Center basically turns your television/stereo into a networked accessory for your computer. That simple statement has a bit of punch behind it. If you can listen to it or watch it on your computer, you can now do it on your television.
As with any good review, I'll cover both the good and the bad. The bad news was that it took forever and a day to set up, and the documentation was seriously lacking. It has a few step by step instructions that can get you up and running if everything is going well, but if it doesn't, you're in for being on hold for an hour or more.
Now the good news--our simple statement holds true. Simply put, there are four main features or the device. First, the videos: you can now stream videos and play them as you would a DVD right on your computer. We found this really amazing right here in the office as we have WinTV set up and now can record off the tv and use this device to play it anywhere.
You can also display your photos, listen to mp3s, and even surf the web. Surfing the web wasn't exactly easy, however the photos came over perfectly, and much quicker than when I play them off the camera. The mp3s also was pretty good, and we were able to easily set it up to go straight to the radio.
Overall, having gotten over the initial set up hurdle, everything was perfectly smooth. Now, it has turned our TV into the ultimate TiVo and our stereo into a million song jukebox.
