Epson PictureMate Personal Photo Printer
Written by: Michael Mardings
A cute little printer than can fit right in your hotel room.
The concept of a photoprinter is interesting and has some major advantages and some disadvantages. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages, but I'll cover both.
First, the advantageous. It's relatively portable and can read memory cards. This is a dream come true for any traveler as you can run this in your hotel room and just pop in the memory card. It weights only a pound and has a cute little handle.
Also, and most important, the quality of the photos is outstanding. The quality is 5760 x 1440, and the pictures come out as good as I've seen in a photolab. Clearly this is the most important, and the photoprinter does it well. Lastly, it's ridiculously easy to use. You just pop in the card, press a button, and you're set.
Now, to be fair, the disadvantages have to be told. First of all, this is made for portability, and even though the device can be hooked up to your home computer, the manufacturer doesn't include the cord to do so, which seems a pretty big oversight. Second, it doesn't have that many picture size formats. For example, its Wallet Sized is pretty big-- I'd love to have something half that size. The only other disadvantage is that it doesn't show a photo preview on its LCD, which would be really helpful, especially when you're printing by number.
Overall, it's perfect for anybody who wants their pictures right then and there. While it had a few disadvantages, they're not enough to steer me away, but I'd love to see what the next generation has in store.
