Organic Story

With more and more large companies producing organic products it is obvious to us that the demand for organic products is increasing. Here are some of our recent favorites.

Natural Choice Organic Sorbet

Natural Choice has been making delicious organic frozen desserts since 1997. Their sorbets are some of the best we have sampled. They come in a variety of flavors such as raspberry, blueberry, and mango. They have a bold and delicious fruity taste. My favorite was the mango - real pleasing mango taste - like I was really eating a mango. These sorbets are creamy because they contain twice as much fruit than any other sorbet. They are not only organic but dairy free, cholesterol free, vegan and kosher. Since pretty much anyone can eat them they make a great dinner party gift.

Chef Drew Organic Salsas

Dear Chef Drew, your Organic Chipotle Lime Salsa made the cut. It had the front of the mouth tang and back of the throat heat with a lingering bite that says eat me! The fact that it is certified organic is a plus although if the truth be told it matters more in the planning stage and less in the eating. We all plan to be healthy, so when the eating comes we can take off like a fool in a jet. By the way, does your Organic Doublefire Roasted Salsa come with a warning? One of the girls decided to drop the chips and eat it with a spoon. Boy can she pack it in! We have decided that "dress down" Fridays must include a Salsa and Chip reception. This works for me.

Pixie Mate

How do I describe Pixie Mate? Mate is the green leaf from which tea is made. It is packed with antioxidants and supplies energy without caffeine. The energy it provides is a calm kind of energy. It sort of balances you out from what I understand. There is some evidence that suggest it helps boost metabolism and help maintain an ideal blood pressure. First let's start by saying it tastes really good. We tried a variety of flavors such as Mate Mocha Latte, Mate Chai Latte, and Dark Roast Mate Latte. Mate Mocha Latte is made with Dutch cocoa and Mate Chai Latte is spiced with cinnamon, cloves and vanilla. They are of course organic and you just need to combine equal parts milk or soy milk with the Pixie Mate product.

My Family Farm

My Family Farm has come up with food products that contain no hydrogenated oils, artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. Real colors and no trans-fat are good things and no preservatives means that they must be eaten now, which is my kind of food. The baked crackers come in handy portion packages and in a variety of tastes: cheese and whole wheat. The Artic Bear Lemon Cookies while not in a portion pack are actually iced and in the shape of bears add the Surf Snacks Pizza. The company claims all the profits go to children's charities but all I care about is taste, price and that it will help make me skinny.

Celestial Seasonings Organic Tea

Looking over the boxes of tea, I noticed that the nutritional labels contain nothing. Nothing. Nothing. A whole lot of zeros. No calories, fat, sodium, carbs, sugars and protein. Nothing. So where does the taste come from, the ingredients? Go ahead check 'em. Let's see, mmm, the Black Tea is made with black tea; the Green Tea is made with green tea and every ingredient in the Vanilla Apple White starts with the word organic. Even the Decaf Lemon Myrtle Green has the organic word along with the word natural. Buy these teas because the boxes make sense and are easy to read. You don't need a chemistry degree to understand what you are drinking.

Clif Bar Nectar Bars

I have a question: What's the same size as a business card and packs an organic punch? No, not your mother- it's a Clif Bar. You've seen them in the health food shops. Their new Nectar Bars pack the punch of two servings of fruit. In comes in a variety of tastes mixing fruits and nuts. I grabbed the Dark Chocolate and Walnut and it tasted like dark chocolate and walnut. This is just what I wanted. An energy bar that tastes like it is supposed to. What good is good and needs no help from me, so I'll just shut up and eat the Lemon, Vanilla and Cashew.

Hungry Sultan Healthy Lunch to Go

Hungry Sultan has put together a "Lunch to Go" series of organic foods. Their website lists four mixtures of Hummus: The Original Garbanzo Bean dip, the Garbanzo Bean with Roasted Garlic, Spicy and Sun Dried Tomatoes. The roasted garlic sang to me the siren song of eternal pleasure and delivered organic delights. The portion size would be better used as a mid-afternoon snack rather than a meal replacement. It comes in a two serving sized can with two packages of three crackers each. The small spoon and the easy open can enable a no mess break.

Traditional Medicines Just for Kids

Here's a thought: children are a different type of human and not little adults. Based on this, Traditional Medicinal has come up with a wonderful sick room package that really does help the child in the mind, body and spirit. Nothing heavy duty here, just a way of giving the child a relief with an organic weight-appropriate dose, one-on-one parent time to read the story on the box and little fun facts on the individual packages that leaves happy thoughts. "Nighty Night" for those times when the child just can't sleep and "Winter Season Tea" to help the body stay strong. I figure the whole thing could take about 30 minutes from steeping to lights out. Probably the best thing in the kit is the opportunity to give full attention to the little one. Even we dopey parents can get it right. /Thanks for the help!

Jim's Organic Coffee

Socially and environmentally responsible coffee and it tastes good too! But, I really have to admit that I do not drink coffee based on responsibility. It is only taste that matters everything else is a bonus. Jim offers 32 varieties of organic coffee mixtures and four of them are decaffeinated. We found out that Jim once worked on Wall Street so we know he is a coffee drinker and one of us. Go Jim!!! Here in the shop, we have been drinking Jim's organic coffee for the past week and the pot is always empty when I go for my second cup.

Santa Cruz Organic Peanut Butter

Light roasted and dark roasted, the light is light and the dark is, well you know. What makes this different is the lack of hydrogenated oils and trans-fatty acids. In fact it is low in sodium too. Crunchy or creamy the choice is yours. My choice was both, on toast instead of bread. I think I prefer the creamy although the crunchy gives a little after gift of little peanut flavors between the teeth.

Santa Cruz Organic Juice

Monitored by Quality Assurance International these juices are made from concentrate to the high requirements of the National Organic Standards. When given a choice, always drink the socially responsible juice. Knowing how organic they are makes you special. I suggest the Orange Mango or the Orange Pineapple for refreshing hits in the morning. The orange taste carries the fruit flavor but does not overwhelm it. All the flavors we tried were excellent.

R.W. Knudsen Family Organic Juices

Pomies stand up. Your juice has arrived! When pomegranates can be mixed with the tastes of cranberry and blueberry, you know it must be good. The Knudsen family has been knocking around juices for many years and is quite knowledgeable in what's good to drink but they don't act like know-it-alls. All natural ingredients equal all natural flavor. Some of their other great flavors include Organic Pineapple and Organic Orange Carrot.

Organic Vintners

When ones life is organic or vegan they are always on the look out for that special restaurant or purchase foods that can meet their life standards. I recently learned that many wines contain a slight bit of animal fat to enhance the fermentation process. The Organic Vintners assemble both Organic and Vegan wines. I have tasted the Organic Vintners Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 "Vegan" and liked it. It enhanced the experience of the meal and so I will buy more. The best review is from life experience so there you have it. Hit the website and buy: Organic if you don't want the chemicals and Vegan because it's your lifestyle. In both cases it's also your money.

Soyfee Organic Coffee Substitute

The short review is this: soy beans made into coffee. The label said that I could get the health of soy without the problems of coffee, and the only thing I wanted to know was: Did it taste good? So we brewed up a pot and tasted. First the smell is rather earthy. Not offensive but earthy: like being on a camping trip in the rain. I took mine with a little soymilk. Yeah, I have already started the conversion to soy and added no sugar. Let's just say it doesn't taste like coffee but is an interesting substitute.
