It takes out two basic types of particles in the air: those you see and those you don't. The ones you see are like smoke, dust and lint. On a sunny day watch a sunbeam as it enters the room. Look very intensely into that beam and soon your eyes will focus on the little thing "floating" in the light. That's the stuff you're breathing in.
