NabiMed Spa
Written by: Janet Pope
Since my skin regiment is basically to wash my face with soap and water everyday, I was the last person in the office you would assume would be asked to do a story on a medspa. For some odd reason, I was actually the first person chosen and with a fresh perspective, I actually learned a lot about skin care.
Nabi medspa is a full service medical spa situated on the upper west side of New York City. Being a spa novice, I wasn't even aware that there were "medical" spas, as compared to the ever-growing number of spas, popping up on every street corner. Med spa has a trained clinical nurse practitioner, plastic surgeon and medically trained aestheticians on staff. They offer the newest skincare and body treatments ranging from; laser hair removal, laser skin rejuvenation, corrective acne treatment, Vibradermabrasion and acid peels to BOTOX.
Ivy Cho is the owner of this three-month old facility and has successfully fashioned the interior to have a calming, non-clinical look. Alexandra would be my aesthetician for the afternoon and since I could barely pronounce her title, I was happy to call her Alex. After showing me around the facility, I was asked to sit in front of a Visia-Complexion Analysis machine, which is used as a pretreatment tool. The state of the art machine actually takes an intense picture of your skin and breaks the "bad news" down into different pictures highlighting- wrinkles, sun damage, acne, etc. When I saw my skin photos- I cringed and was ready for any help that Alex could offer.
First, Alex cleansed my skin and gave me a few lessons in Skin Care 101. Our skin rejuvenates itself when it is younger, thus a baby's skin is so fresh and soft, but as time goes on it loses its ability to do that. Though my mom may have gotten away with using soap and water her whole life, my skin was obviously not happy about that choice.
Next, I received a vibradermabrasion, which felt like a vibrator gently rubbing off all my dead skin cells. I thought this would feel annoying, but I actually found it relaxing and the headache I had all morning was soon gone. Alex than applied a salicylic acid on my skin, which she warned might burn a little. So with great apprehension, I clenched my teeth, only to find that for me the burning sensation was thankfully extremely mild. Next on the agenda, was a skin care product derived from olives and then a sun block, which I swore I would start to apply faithfully.
I felt relaxed and my face felt extremely clean and soft to the touch. My skin was slightly red the next day and my nose peeled a little, but it only looked like I had been in the sun (God forbid!).
All in all it was a very pampering, pleasant and informative experience and Alex would be proud that I have been moisturizing every day.
