I finally caved in and bought my daughter a Nintendo DS.

Ubisoft

I finally caved in and bought my daughter a Nintendo DS. My next problem was figuring out what games to get her? I wanted something that was entertaining, but without any of the violence that seems to be plaguing today's games. She made it easy for me when she picked out Imagine games from Ubisoft.

If you've never played them, the Imagine series are fun, interactive games that let game players become babies, mothers, and a whole slew of professions. I noticed a lot of the titles were geared to girls, but some were inclusive to either gender.

I picked up three Imagine games for my daughter, and while she was at school, I gave them a try.

Playing Imagine Fashion Designer, I could be Calvin Klein, John Galliano, or Karl Lagerfield. The object is to create the perfect line of clothing by combining cuts, colors and patterns. Once I have the clothes ready, I dress up my models with makeup, nails, jewelry and accessories. And now that my models are wearing my designs, the logical step would be to show them off. What better way to display the latest in fashion than with a photo shoot and catwalk show? Plus, designers can share their work with their friends via Nintendo Wi-Fi. That's all great and fun, but if you're goal-oriented like me, you'll want something to shoot for. Imagine Fashion Designer features an Office mode that lets you play the role of a hip young designer running a boutique agency with demanding clients. Succeed and you'll be the fashion queen (or king). Fail, and . . . well, that's the best part. You can delete your game and start fresh.

If fashion is not your cup of tea, maybe cooking is. Imagine Master Chef lets you become a world-class cook like Emeril, Julia Childs, or even Rachel Ray. Whip up some appetizers, entrees and mouth-watering desserts (all without the guilt because these calories aren't real). But to be a master chef, you have to prove it. Imagine Master Chef tests your culinary skills with technical and kitchen know-how mini-games like cooking quizzes and plate-moving contests. Your NintendoDS will be the busiest little bistro this side of Manhattan.

My daughter and I share one thing in common: We both love sports. I was excited to see her pick out Imagine Figure Skater. Figure skating is a sport, right? If you can call bowling a sport, then I'm game. The object of Imagine Figure Skater is obvious: Wow your audience with jumps, twirls and tripleaxels. The moves are fun and more than challenging, even for a 30-year-old man (though I still think the virtual coach was unfair in demanding a Flying Camel from a novice). As with Imagine Fashion Designer, Figure Skater goes beyond sports and into areas targeted specifically for girls. Imagine Figure Skater lets you design outfits, makeup and hairstyles as well as pick music and routines for competitions.

I'll probably make playing these Imagine games a guilty pleasure when left home alone, but I am certain my daughter - and any girl out there - will love playing them.
