Bre Morgan
Move over Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, and Selena Gomez. There's another rising young star hitting the Radio Disney airwaves, Bre Morgan. What she may lack in years, Bre gains in talent. She not only sings, she plays both the guitar and piano, and writes her own music. TheCelebrityCafe.com spoke with this talented 16-year-old singer about how she got her start, her inspiration, and how she's putting her own stamp on the music industry.
TCC: When did you start singing?
BM: It was when I was like, honestly, I know this is crazy, but when I was like nine months old. I just started humming nursery rhymes. It's really as long as I can remember and I've been humming and singing and taking lessons forever.
TCC: When did you realize you wanted to make singing a career?
BM: Probably about three or four years ago.
TCC: What was the moment that made you think that this is what I want to do forever?
BM: Well, my dad knew some people. They came by the house and they showed me some of the music that they were writing and stuff. Then I--this is before Hannah Montana and all that—and I was like "Wow, this is awesome. This is definitely what I want to be doing." Then I fell in love with the whole industry.
TCC: Speaking of Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez...what do you think about their music since you're the same age as them?
BM: I think it's great. I think it's really great. I love the Disney channel and I love that whole kind of thing because I really do love Disney. Some of my music played on Radio Disney before. It's kind of the same style of music as them, but I'm just trying to find my own sound and make it my way--make it more like Top 40 main stream.
TCC: How would you describe your music then?
BM: Right now, honestly, I'm trying to find my own sound, my own genre, but it's kind of a mix of some dance beats in there, and there's also some rock in it and some pop. It's just a mixture of different elements from different genres.
TCC: Songs like "Breakaway," "Lost Inside Myself," and "Miracle"…where did you get your inspiration from?
BM: Well, "Lost Inside Myself," I recorded that album about a year or two ago. It was kind of about my friend going through a breakup and, of course, I've had my own to share. Just a little bit of breakups here and there--not the most fun things in the world. You just got to get over them and move on. I've found that I could write about other people's experiences and my friends experiences in high school because I never really got the full-on high school experience. I got the down low, dirty stuff from all of my friends, the rumors and everything so making songs from that. "Lost Inside Myself" is just kind of a find who you are and I think it's a kind of metamorphosis and you're just trying to figure out who you're going to be. One time, I was a little lost inside myself trying to find where I'm going to go and now that I've turned 16, I've just felt like, man, so ready and I'm just so ready to bust out of this cocoon and become a beautiful butterfly.
TCC: Is that where "Breakaway" came from too then?
BM: "Breakaway" is more of a breaking away from a relationship, a bad experience, anything, making it a totally new positive outlook on things.
TCC: What about your new song "Miracle?"
BM: "Miracle is about...basically, I'm all about women empowerment and girls really feeling very confident and being able to basically set their standards and not settle. So "Miracle" is basically about not settling for any guy or any situation or anything because it's kind of about like, "you better respect who I am." If you're really going to get to know me, you've got to put in the work. My love is so much more than a quick fix. It's really going to take more than just enough if you want to get to know who I am and actually be a part of my life. It's setting the standards high.
TCC: Have you ever told anyone that you wrote a song about them? What was their reaction?
BM: Well one of the songs that I wrote was about my ex-boyfriend. He was like "oh wow, alright." It wasn't the best outcome from that, but I don't know. It was a little harsh, kinda like Taylor Swift as she throws some names into her songs. It's pretty obvious.
TCC: Out of all of your songs, what is your favorite one to perform?
BM: Probably "Miracle." That's my new song. See, "Lost Inside Myself" was my old album and I'm kind of busting away from that now to try and find a new style that I'm going to really be into now.
TCC: Is that what makes you like it the most, because it's your new thing or is there something special about that song when you perform it?
BM: Well, honestly, I haven't performed "Miracle" too many times yet live. It was just done so we just recorded it. I wrote it with some writers and it's like fresh and new. It's just the sound that I love and I love the message and I love it all. I think the live aspect of it performing, is really going to be really awesome because it's very high energy and it's a great dance song too.
TCC: What are your musical influences?
BM: I like Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson. I like a bunch of different people all the way from The Beatles, to people from a long time ago and now. So people on the charts like Rihanna and people like that.
TCC: What would your dream collaboration be?
BM: I would say I'd love to do a duet with Justin Bieber and I absolute love Celine Dion. That would be my dream, to do a duet with her.
TCC: Have you ever gotten to meet Justin Bieber or any of the other Disney people?
BM: Not Justin Bieber, yet, but I've gotten to meet Ashley Tisdale, the Suite Life twins, and other people like that. Yeah, I've gotten to meet my share of them.
TCC: You've toured with some famous pop stars like Jordan Knight and Jordin Sparks who both started their careers at an early age and then became hugely successful. Did you get any tips from them?
BM: You know what, I also loved meeting Jordin Sparks. She's such a sweet girl. She is so nice and she has the most amazing voice ever and she's so down to earth. She was totally cool. I don't remember asking her any questions about the business, but she was really chill.
TCC: Any fun or interesting touring stories?
BM: Well, that was probably my favorite experience out of all of the shows I've done. [It] was definitely the one with Jordin Sparks because there were so many kids there. I seriously had to sign autographs for like three hours. It was insane and the line was so long, it was amazing. Nat and Alex Wolff were really nice too and they were great so it was a great, awesome day. Everyone was great, very supportive. I made a lot of fans and friends there.
TCC: You're in the movie Fame. How did that come about?
BM: Well, I auditioned for the role. It was a small role, but it was still credited and I basically got it from the first audition. I guess they liked me that much so they gave it to me. I went in and I did it and that was amazing because I got to meet the cast and they were all really nice. It was a great experience, too, because my dream is to have a lead role in a movie or TV show. I'd love to have my own TV show so I'm just working up to that and auditioning for all the pilots. So, different things are in the works.
TCC: Do you prefer acting or singing?
BM: I can't choose. Honestly, I like them both equally. There's definitely some things I like about acting more than singing and things about singing I like more than acting so there's no way to actually choose.
TCC: What's up next for you? Prom? Tour? Movies?
BM: Did you hear that I went to the prom? Well, I did go to the prom and that was really cool. I went in April and that was fun. Honestly, right now what's in the works for me is probably getting this album together. I have 6 songs already. Those 6 songs will probably be on the album and I'm working on an awesome song. I recently got the track to that the other day and it has different beats in it. It's really cool so I think that's going to be an awesome song. I'm writing it about a personal experience I'm having at the moment. Not the funnest little experience with a guy. I guess you have to get over it.
TCC: Can you give us a little bit of information on that song? What is it going to be about?
BM: Well, it's boyfriend troubles. I think we're in the process of slowly breaking this off so I gotta make a smash in your face. You know what I mean? Put all of the anger. So if he hears it on the radio he can be like, "Oh God, it's about me? " We'll try not to make it too mean.
TCC: Is there an expected time for the album release?
BM: Well, at the moment, I'm not too sure. Once the album is done and we have some hits. Hopefully we have some hits so that we find a major label and be in the process of getting signed. After that we can release the album.
TCC: Finally, what do you want people to know about you and your music?
BM: I like to describe my music as the kind of music that you can pop into the radio when you're on your way to work, or when girls are having a slumber party, or the school dance or any occasion, just relaxing or just having an awesome time and throwing in that party. So I would say my music is uplifting, really positive. I think that's really important. It's very empowering and always has a really positive message intertwined with the lyrics. I think that's very very important. Especially since there's some negative things out there right now. It's very important to keep everything uplifting. Especially for the young generation and I would also say that who I am is definitely going to come through the lyrics of my songs because I write them so whatever the song is about is definitely probably going to be something I've been through and something that I hope is going to help girls and boys out there with their experiences because they're going through the same things I'm going through. I think that maybe it will have a message in there for them so they can kind of get through their situation--- whether it's a breakup, or it's a whatever it is---maybe it's a loss of confidence, building back that self esteem and getting out there and showing the world what you've got.
I think it's very import that we keep the lyrics clean and things good. I want to have a clean image, you know? Something that the moms and the little kids can say "oh yeah, it's okay."
