Fred Willard

Fred Willard is a staple in comedy known for his roles in the mockumentaries "This is Spinal Tap," "Waiting for Guffman," "Best in Show," "A Mighty Wind," and "For Your Consideration." He returns to film with "Youth In Revolt," which comes to DVD and Blu-Ray June 15.

TheCelebrityCafe.com's Cristen Kleindienst spoke with Fred about "Youth" and his place in comedy.

TCC: How is your role as Mr. Ferguson different from other roles that you’ve played?

FW: It was inadvertently funny. The movie comes from a book that I’m not familiar with, but it’s very popular with young kids. I was actually promoting a different movie at the time, when someone mentioned the book to me. So, I read the book. My character is a very socially conscious person. I had to lie on the floor for a whole day for the scene when my character takes the mushrooms. It wasn’t over the top.

TCC:What special features should we expect on the DVD and Blu-Ray?

FW: I don’t know. I haven’t seen the DVD or the Blu-Ray, but I was very impressed by the scene with the car going into the restaurant and blowing up. I wasn’t around for that, and I’m excited to see it.

TCC: What’s your favourite scene in the movie?

FW: I enjoy everything Michael Cera does. He’s such a star. His character had very sharp lines, and he delivered them very well.

TCC: How would you describe the main theme in the movie?

FW: Well, that you can survive a loose situation. The main character is in a very dysfunctional family. The character Nick lives with an alter-ego, and if we all had alter-egos, we’d have someone there giving us a push.

TCC: You’ve guest starred in a lot of television shows; is there one guest part that’s your favourite?

FW: My part in "Chuck." I got to play a spy who was brought in to coach the young spies. I wasn't a buffoon, or the witty neighbor. It was something different.
