You may know Katelyn Pippy as Emmalin Holden on Lifetime's Army Wives. But there is more to her than what meets the eye. The actress is also a student who just got accepted into Cornell University, and an avid hockey player. TheCelebrityCafe.com's Cynthia Almanzar spoke with Katelyn about acting, hobbies and her other projects.
TheCelebrityCafe.com: I just heard you got accept into Cornell, congratulations.
Katelyn Pippy: I did, thank you. I appreciate that.
TCC: This must be a really exciting time for you.
KP: Yeah, it definitely is. I’m really excited to get in. I mean, I graduated high school last year so I took a year off but I'm finally get used to, you know graduating, getting ready for college and new beginnings and everything.
TCC: Do you plan in putting your acting career on hold when you go to school?
KP: I'm kind of just going to play it by ear and see if I can maybe audition and stuff on the summer. But obviously when I'm there and in school, I'm going to be committed to school. It's only four years and I've got the rest of my life for acting, which is what I want to do. So I think I can just be committed for four years, you know.
TCC: That's great. That's something that you need to experience. Going to school and all of that.
KP: Yes, definitely, especially because I didn't really get to do the whole high school experience the traditional way. I want to do college right.
TCC:: You have been working as an actress for a long time. Is this something that you always wanted to do?
KP: Yeah, ever since I was 7 or 8 years old. I still love musical theater in any kind of transition … and I think because I was in New York doing musical theater and went out for all of these auditions. I've circled around that.
TCC: This is what you love?
KP: If there is something that you could do besides acting and you could be happy you should go do that because as actors this is all we want to do. This is we all want to do. It's literally from. I mean, since I was 7 or 8 years old I've known what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I can’t see myself doing anything else.
TCC: What do you plan to study in school?
KP: I'm going to study theater arts and have a concentration in nutrition. I'm kind of a health nut.
TCC: How do you get your role on Army Wives?
KP: I auditioned for it in New York and then I had a meeting with producers. After my audition they passed the tape around. Everyone saw the audition tape and then--this was when the [writer's] strike came over--so I didn't hear from anybody for a long time, for months and months. I was kind of worried if after the strike was over if they still wanted me. Then [the strike] became resolved and it turns out that they did.
TCC: What attracted you to this role? Why did you want to play this character?
KP: Well, when I first auditioned I didn't even know that I was there to replace someone that was already cast on the show, but I read the sides and the sides are very dramatic. When I was younger, drama was something that I was worried about and something that I wasn't sure if I was really good at, so I was interested to see whether or not I have acting chops to do a dramatic role.
TCC: Do you find you have any similarities with your character?
KP: I think that we were both raised in the traditional family and have traditional values--just always being polite and respecting people, so that's similar. She’s more reserved than I am. I mean she's kind of shy and takes a little bit of time to warm up to people, but there are still a lot of similarities. I mean, obviously, I play hockey and to put that on show that was a big one. And we've got the same age and we've both graduated high school and are getting ready for college and just preparing for this next chapter in life.
TCC: So you play hockey? That's rough sport. What attracted you to it?
KP: Well, from where I’m from in Pennsylvania everybody plays and the Penguins are a big deal. So it was just a natural thing to do. I mean, everybody plays all my friends did, my brother did. When I was younger, I would go to his games and be all around the rink a lot and I just decided that I love it. Actually, I started hockey when I was 6, acting came couple of years later. And I was lucky that I could do both.
TCC: So going back to Army Wives, do you have an idea what's going to happen on the next season?
KP: I don't at all. We haven't got a script yet. We haven't even got a shoot schedule officially, so, I don't.
TCC: Do you have any projects until season 5 starts?
KP: I'm auditioning right now; I'm on my way. So hopefully if I could get a guest on a show or something that would be great. I got to be with my friends all year while I was home for the summer and then I came out to L.A. in the fall.
TCC: Where do you hope your acting career would go. Will you keep working on TV or did you want to try something else?
KP: I'm really grateful for the acting and just really anything that I can do. I really want to do movies, so I can go to great locations and meet new people and tell great stories. At some point I’ll go back to musical theater. I love to be in Broadway. I love performing live and in front of people and that's completely different thing and I think that's a different kind of thrill than being on a TV show.
