DJ Skribble
Lawanda Johnson: The soundtrack for 'The Legacy: The Best of Big Pun' is out on Tuesday. Tell me about that.
DJ Skribble: I really can’t tell you much about that because I don’t know what made up the soundtrack per se. I did a song with Pun called 'Must Be The Music' but I don’t think it’s on the soundtrack. Yea, I don't know much about it, but I did some of the music.
LJ: When did you meet Big Pun? What do you remember of him?
DJ S: Just the fact that he was an awesome dude and one of the most talented rappers I have ever seen. I had the honor working with him. He has changed the game a lot, especially for the Latino market putting a full front in Hip Hop…He is one of the greatest rapper that we had in our time.
LJ: You were rated one of the top 3 DJs in 2008. You're up for America's Best DJ. How does that make you feel?
DJ S: It is great to be a part of something like that, to be a nominee. To be in the top ten for anything, no matter where you're placed. Number one is great, you know. I have been DJing for 20 plus years now. I’ve played for the people I use to play for in the 80s and now in the 90s, I’m playing for their kids or little brothers or husbands or whatever you know. I’m still doing it so it’s a pretty amazing thing and to be on top game like that and still be consider on of the top ten DJs in the world. It’s no greater feeling like that. I made a career out of it and was able to support a family and keep my life going.
LJ: You do over 200 shows a year. How do you manage such a busy schedule?
DJ S: Well I have a great agent to thank for that and wonderful travel agent also. But now that I have a family it’s a little different you know, being away from home. But I chose to do this with my life like you miss certain things like birthdays and you miss holidays. But at the end of the day those kids are coming to see you play and I’ve been chosen, so you got to love it, love every minute of it. I love to travel I’ve been to 44 countries, 40 out of 50 states, and 5 out of 7 continents. So that’s what I’ve chosen to do.
LJ: You've also done a little bit of acting. Any plans to return to the film?
DJ S: Yes. I’ve done two Broadway shows. So I love to support my peers in the industry, so yeah sure, I love being on T.V. I’m a big fan.
LJ: What projects do you have in the works? What’s next for you?
DJ S: The Big Pun film that’s coming out. It's finally coming out, and I'm in that. I designed some headphones for the company called Aero Seven. I have my own DJ signature line of headphones coming out and touring for my new cd that’s out now called 'Total Club Hits Volume 3' which is doing very well in every K-Mart, Walmart, Best Buy, you know all the stores and it on ITunes.
LJ: What advice do you have for a young woman or man who wants to become a DJ?
DJ S: What I say to everybody, now with technology as it is; it is a lot easier for an access new music. Don’t become a DJ just because you want to be cool. You should do it because you love the art of DJing. Learn everything about DJing since everyone is using trackers or if they are still using the vital versions of it. You can still do everything you did with records, but learn. Don't just rely on the laptop. Don’t get into this for the money. You should love doing this and love performing for people. And making people shake their ass, that's the most important thing. If you’re not doing making them shakes their asses, then you're not doing your job. (Laughs).
L.J: (Laughs). Right, I can definitely agree with that one.
