Warren-G - West Coast Rapper

By: Dominick A. Miserandino

Warren G, famous for the hit album 'Regulator' talks about his latest album 'Return of the Regulator'

DM) One thing that struck me immediately about your new album is how many collaborators you have on it.

WG) I got Dr. Dre, Nate Dogg, and all my old friends.

DM) How was it working with a group of your old friends?

WG) I looked at the whole thing as that I wanted to do something different, and I also wanted to go back and do different stuff with people that I was successful with from the beginning. It's the same people, but a different type of music and style. That's what I did, when I did those collaborations. I didn't just use them for doing a verse or whatever. Like Nate, I didn't have him sing, well, yes I did have him sing a whole verse because that's what he do, people tend to think that he can just do hooks, but I had him sing a song with me and Snoop [Doggy Dog]. He usually talks on people's stuff.

DM) Was it hard to stay true to your own style with so many different influences there?

WG) No, not at all. I'm going to be Warren G on whatever I do. You know what I'm saying. I'm not going to switch up for nobody. Whatever I do is Warren G.

DM) Who else would you have loved to collaborate with on this album that you didn't have the chance to this time?

WG) There are not that many other people... I wouldn't have minded doing something with Nelly maybe.

DM) When you have all of these collaborators on the album is it more work or more fun having your friends there?

WG) When I did the song with Snoop and Nate it was like a party. We were laughing and talking and getting our drink on.

DM) How do you get any work done when you have all of your friends around? (laughing)

WG) When its time to lay your part, the bullsh&* stops and we go in there and do what we got to do. Business goes. You know what I'm saying? We go in there, and once every person has got his or her part together... that's when the business starts.

DM) You call this album, "The Return of the Regulator." Why did you choose to do "The Return of the Regulator" album now when there have been a few albums between your original "Regulator" album and this one?

WG) I call it "The Return of the Regulator", because it's the hungriness I had for this record. Like the hungriness I had for the first record... It's that same hungriness... that regulate type of sh&%, along with the help of Kevin Law who also influenced me to go ahead and use that name.

DM) What made you hungry this time for it?

WG) It was a fresh start, and I was with a company that wasn't an official company the last time, Restless Records, and that didn't work out so it's like I'm starting all over again.

DM) How does starting over feel for you?

WG) It's fun. It's an exciting experience.

DM) Some people might get scared about the feeling of starting over again.

WG) I ain't never scared. I make hit records. That's what I do.
