Slipper and the Rose: The Story of Cinderella, The

Director Bryan Forbes' elaborate musical is based on one of the most romantic fairy tale stories of all times -- Cinderella. The Slipper and the Rose was filmed in the glorious Austrian countryside -- a perfect setting for fairy tale, indeed. There have been many lovely remakes to this classic story, but for me, this one is so delightfully entertaining, so passionately tender where matters of the heart are of the upmost importance, and so magical that I can't help but fall in love with the whole idea of it all. The Slipper and the Rose is neither just another telling of the Cinderella story, nor is it about being a musical that sets it aside from others. This version goes deeper into the passion that Cinderella and the Prince feel for one another. There's a darker, moodier underscore to this story, but it remains true to the classic elements of the Cinderella story.

Prince Edward (Richard Chamberlain) is not your typical high and mighty prince who daydreams of casting himself upon that mighty royal throne and ruling as King of Euphrania. Truth be told, he cannot stand all the fuddy duddy hassles and fusses over being a Prince. Prince Edward wants to live in normalcy, a luxury of which he's envious, free and happy beyond the castle grounds. Prince Edward firmly believes that for one to be married, there must be love between both people. If not, how could life be happy and fulfilling if love is not the first and most honorable emotion to be felt?

Well, Prince Edward is in for some rough sailing with his beliefs of how marriage should be because his father, the king (Michael Hordern), has sent his son on a journey to view an assembly of brides from which the Prince is to choose and Lord Chamberlain (Kenneth More) is just as anxious for Prince Edward to marry so the Kingdom may be freed from the potential hardships of war.
