Dig!
Dig! Is a movie chronicling the rise and fall of two bands, The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. However, the rise occurs with The Dandy Warhols, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre finds the fall. More specifically, it’s the lead singer Anton who finds the fall.
This all said, what makes the DVD fascinating is that it’s real, but while I watched it, I kept thinking it was completely unreal. Anton is so completely between the world of genius and off the edge that it almost seems that he’s acting. He can’t be this insane… but yet he is. His antics are self destructive and psychotic, but yet there’s some sort of genius to him.
Then, on the opposite side are the Dandy Warhols, who seem to have it somewhat balanced and together. Both bands started roughly at the same time and the lead singers were both friends. This is where one band rises and the others fall.
Watching the DVD is like watching reality TV at its best, as it’s so completely real it leaves you spellbound and truly wondering, “Do people really live like this?” In some senses this is along the same lines and the polar opposite of ‘This is Spinal Tap.’ It’s not funny, but it illustrates the madness that makes up a tortured genius. A brilliantly done film.
