Gilligan's Island - Seasons 1, 2, and 3
A three-hour tour has never been so much fun...
On the off-chance you’ve been stranded on a deserted island for the past forty years, “Gilligan’s Island” is a sitcom about seven people stranded in the south Pacific after a shipwreck. The memorable theme song explains who they are: the Skipper and his first mate Gilligan; millionaires Mr. and Mrs. Thurston Howell III; movie star Ginger Grant; farm girl Mary Ann Summers; and science professor Roy Hinkley.
The series ran for 98 episodes, from 1964-1967, top rated to the end, and now they’re all available on DVD.
The sets are sadly lacking in extras. The best bonus is the original unaired pilot, included with Season One. Series creator Sherwood Schwartz provides commentary for that episode, and one episode in the other two seasons. Russell Johnson (The Professor) makes an appearance in the Season Two Intro. The other extras aren’t worth mentioning. I had one technical problem with the Season One set (the disk froze on the last scene of the last episode), and the retailer replaced it. The audio from episode to episode is uneven, but not a major pain.
The show itself is a joy to watch. Forty years later, the humor still holds up for the most part. A few jokes are topical and dated, but of course, pratfalls and slapstick never go out of style. “Gilligan’s Island” is good clean family fun that shows how much you can do with bamboo and coconuts and proves that even a bumbling fool can do good once in a while.
