Fight Club

I am Jack's amazing film.

Luckily for the world, Fight Club was filmed before 9/11. If it weren’t, it probably would have never made it to the screen. The anti-establishment tactics featured in the film bear too close of a resemblance to recent acts of terrorism. However, this is not a film about fighting the government, or getting back at the man. This is a film about fighting ourselves, fighting our insecurities, fighting our failures.

Director David Fincher and screenwriter Jim Uhls turn Chuck Palahniuk’s sharp novel into a work of cinematic genius. Fight Club succeeds as a film because it deals with so many relevant themes. The fact that the narrator (Ed Norton) remains nameless throughout the movie speaks to the loss of individuality in today’s product-obsesses world. Although the narrator is an extreme example, anyone can relate to his attempt to find something purer than his current existence.

The different, but equally powerful characters, Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter) and Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), support the narrator on his quest for enlightenment. Marla helps him see the man he is, and Tyler helps him become the man he wants to be.

The Fight Club DVD features running commentary from the director, actors, writers, and technical staff. Newcomers to the film should first see it without the commentary. After that, watching the it with the commentary will further your appreciation for the film.
