Mind Hunters
Hunting for minds...and uh, still looking.
In what must be the most aptly titled film in years, the long shelved Renny Harlin opus finally comes to DVD after a decidedly short-lived theatrical run. Aptly titled because when watching it, one has a hard time finding any semblance of intelligence from anyone involved.
Agatha Christie-like in its premise, Mind Hunters, feels like that late nineties FBI Profiler obsessed glut of cinematic detritus that would later be a television staple. In fact it stars Kathryn Morris, star of TV’s Cold Case, as a timid pixie haired wannabe profiler, who must hold her own amongst former Hollywood stars like Val Kilmer and Christian Slater. Given their combined screen time engaging only to those who missed their Ritalin dose, perhaps we can’t fault them.
From the start the film just writes the character’s names on a list and begins scratching them off so you don’t have to. There is little rhyme or reason anywhere in the story and the script has all the plot contrivances and dialogue one would expect from a fifth grade short story. All in all the movie serves for a good laugh and maybe a collective, sympathetic sigh from the audience at how these actors could be convinced to be in something like this.
The DVD has a small featurette on the less than impressive stunts and a commentary track by Harlin, which should only be used as an apology or explanation of how badly a film can be treated when it becomes apparent no one cares. For those still clutching the remote in their hands, there is also a walk through Crimetown, a fictional place where this movie should have stayed.
