Batman Begins
Marking the triumphant return of the Dark Knight to the silver screen and now DVD, Batman Begins trumps its predecessors in all avenues so completely I am compelled to forget they even exist. Not only is it one of the best comic book movies of all time, I would be willing to wager it is one of the smartest, well-written, deeply thought out films of the year.
Taking its time, the film explores not the destruction of a young Bruce Wayne’s life (played brilliantly by Christian Bale), but the rebuilding and reconstruction it undergoes during his tutelage abroad. The theme of reconstruction is very much on the minds of the filmmakers. It feels as through watching a young Wayne turn into the Batman, how he struggles to rebuild, to be legitimate and to be taken seriously, and the film too asks the audience the same. Warner Bros. knows it ran afoul with, I’ll go ahead and say it, all previous Batman incarnations (save for the brilliant animated series). And here it seems they are asking audiences to recognize the rebuilding process, the time, effort, and dedication that was put into making such a thoroughly wonderful product.
The double disc collector’s edition is the only one worth a fan’s time. The second disc is jam packed with extras. Including a wonderful look at the unique fighting style and action choices Christopher Nolan made when making this film also there is a great in depth how-to on the miniatures during the climactic train sequence. All in all this is a satisfying addendum to a completely thrilling movie.
