9 Songs

The question of art over obscenity would probably have been more overwrought with Michael Winterbottom’s “9 songs” had it featured more prominent actors and actresses. Instead, he took the safe road and featured no names with a list of some of the hottest acts in pop-music today, which then begs the question: did they have any idea what they were getting into?

“9 songs” features real actors engaging in real intercourse during the run of the very short film. While yes, it is a feature length film and yes, these actors have other credits, Kieran O’Brien, has television work and appears in Winterbottom’s next, Tristam and Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story. While Margo Stilley, has had significantly less work, but still it doesn’t appear that having sex on screen did either of their careers any real harm. Then again one wonders if anyone even saw the film.

What film there is follows Matt, (O’Brien) a glaciologist, as he recounts the events of the year prior. Apparently, he spent the previous year going to concerts and having sex with a beautiful American college student. Literally, that’s it. There are some allusions to Lisa (Stilley) having some emotional issues, hence why Matt is simply remembering her and not being with her. Plus, Winterbottom squeezes water from a stone with the inclusion of the cold, desolation of the Antarctic alluding to the future Matt sees for himself without Lisa. All in all it’s a bummer of a movie that can’t really titillate with its very graphic sex scenes.

The DVD does come from Tartan and they place a nice DTS track on the disc so at least one can enjoy the likes of Franz Ferdinand, The Von Bondies, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Elbow in all their 5.1 glory. Really, that is the only reason to rent this ambitious, but underdeveloped film.
