Domino

Overblown and underthought never looked so bad.

At first glance, the average viewer might perceive Tony Scott as the kind of director who, like so many underachieving second grader’s has A.D.D. However, the more discerning viewer may notice that Mr. Scott actually seems to suffer from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. This is evident in the way his characters all repeat their lines and through his annoying and hyperactive editing style, perform the same banal action time and again. If one were to look at his apparent malady on a lager scale, it too would confirm the worst of suspicions. Scott is repeating himself with all of his own films, which a person can only proclaim makes all his films, boring.

Keira Knightly stars as the titular model cum bounty hunter, but brings only a pigheaded bitchiness to the role that is neither entertaining nor humorous. She heads a cast that is so over the top they decided to put Dabney Coleman in as something menacing. Although, it is safe to say that Mickey Rourke is a welcome diversion from the rest of the inane antics of this movie such as casting has-been actors, Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green to play themselves as…has been actors. I guess they got something right.

Being a fan of screenwriter Richard Kelly’s other work, it is certainly disappointing to see this steaming pile has his name on it. Let’s hope Southland Tales has more of his heart, soul and energy in it. The DVD does come with an impressive 6.1 DTS track – for those with the equipment to enjoy it. Also, there is a commentary track with the aforementioned Kelly and director Scott. Finally, a small featurette on the real Domino Harvey rounds out the better than expected disc from New Line.
