Broken Flowers
Another stellar performance by Bill Murray in this tale of how one man's past mistakes affected others in his life.
Bill Murray might be the only man in Hollywood who can play the same role over and over and still make it work. The writer/director who brought us Coffee and Cigarettes (Jim Jarmusch) is back with Broken Flowers, a story about a man and a puzzling pink letter.
Murray plays Don Johnston, who has just been dumped by his girlfriend when he receives a letter in the mail from a former lover saying that he has a 19-year-old son and that he might be looking for him. Johnston begins his search for clues as to who the mother might be by visiting four former girlfriends unannounced.
As we visit each house, we see the mistakes Johnston has made in his life and how they affected these four different women played by Sharon Stone, Frances Conroy, Jessica Lange and Tilda Swinton.
As charming as Bill Murray might be, it wasn’t enough to overcome the emptiness felt at the end of the movie. One sees the credits start to roll and immediately has at least 10 unanswered questions. Nothing on the DVD extras gives more insight.
