Derailed
It is not often that a film comes, bringing with it a denouement of the male species, then ends up being a complete denouement of humankind altogether. Derailed is the kind of film, which when it was in book form, most likely created a buzz around it by people who thought this was intriguing material; where a married man would, with a terminally ill daughter at home, engage in an illicit affair with someone from the cast of Friends. If that isn’t a sickness in society, I simply don’t know what is.
All humor aside; Derailed has such a screwed up moral compass that even through its attempt at redemption all it does is paint over the glaring mistakes and missteps, which brought the film to that point. Hopelessly lost, the center of the film, which is deceit and hatred, begins to unwind with every further twist and turn that is seen coming from the opening credits. The unfortunate side effect of the indescribably stupid twists is we, the audience, begin to not care at all.
Clive Owen, in particular, should know better than to participate in some tripe like this. The rest of the cast is trying to make names for themselves in Hollywood, as movie stars, which in the grand scheme of things is acceptable. Jennifer Aniston, who must have been exercising some question as to whether or not she could pull this kind of role off, now, with all hope, has the answer she is looking for.
The DVD is available Unrated or R rated, which I can’t discern why. The Unrated edition has nothing notable in terms of extras or scenes. There are some deleted scenes and a featurette to round out the nominal extras.
