Slither

Gooey horror never had it so good.

Writer/Director James Gunn brings to the screen something much like what his horrormeister brother in arms, Eli Roth did: sheer fun. His foray into major motion pictures brings with it some kind of child-like exuberance, which can’t be said for the majority of horror films on the market right now. Slither is the kind of pleasure to watch, as I’m sure it was to make.

Slither follows the exploits of a small town infested with an alien plague that comes in the form of…well, something sticky that slithers. It’s not complicated, but it is gross and laugh-out-loud funny for the majority of the film. Grant Grant (Michael Rooker) is the first unlucky town’s person to stumble across what is essentially the spore for every gross thing to come. Bill Pardy (Serenity’s Nathan Fillion) is the town’s sheriff, funnyman and typical tight-lipped heartbroken guy. The object of his affection, Starla Grant (Spider-Man’s Elizabeth Banks) happens to be married to the new host to Earth’s intergalactic visitor. Well, that’s the primary set up, well, that and stuff has a disgusting tendency to pop and ooze…a lot.

Gunn’s screenplay is razor sharp and funnier than most comedies in theaters right now. The film’s visual effects are a fantastic mixture of old-school physical effects and new-school CGI. The blend is nice and virtually seamless.

Though not for the squeamish, faint of heart or humorless, Slither will do nicely for anyone else looking to have an honest to goodness great time at the theater. Although, the film might have to wait until video to get its legs, that should be reason enough to go see it on the big screen; the complete lack of crowds.
