In Her Shoes

What You See is Not Always What You Get

Ever wanted to be your sister? Ever compare yourself to your friends? They have the looks and can get the guy, or have the brains and make the money. With "In Her Shoes," director Curtis Hanson brings to life an adaptation of Jennifer Weiner's novel and shows the audience what you see is not always what you get.

Maggie Feller, played by Cameron Diaz, is sexy and can definitely get the guy. She should have all the confidence in the world. However, she lacks the intelligence that her sister Rose has. She cannot hold a job, and no one wants the burden of being her keeper. Rose, played by Toni Collette, is a successful lawyer, but she lacks the sexy sassiness that Maggie flaunts. Rose was attempting to tolerate her sister, but Maggie put a strain on their relationship when she slept with Rose's prospective boyfriend.

Within the movie Shirley MacLaine plays Ella, a strong-minded, caring resident at an assistant living home in Florida. Hanson keeps Ella's connection in the movie a mystery until Maggie finds an old birthday card from a grandmother who was hidden from them. She has nowhere else to go now that Rose has given up on her, which leads her to search for Ella. When Rose realizes that Maggie skipped town, she goes to Florida to reconcile with her. Together these women help and learn from each other. Ella realizes that life is worth living, while Rose learns to love again, and Maggie finds the confidence to be someone of importance.
