Boondock Saints
Boondock Saints was written and directed by Troy Duffy in 1999, and though not highly publicized over the years, it has since become a cult classic.
Boondock Saints is the story of two Irish brothers (Sean Patrick Flanery and Norman Reedus) who decide to cleanse South Boston of criminals and assorted nefarious degenerates. The two devout Catholics, after a sign from God, are compelled to execute His will. While it keeps our eyes and ears fulfilled with shootouts and dismal humor, it provides very good cinematography and imagery.
The many subtleties that this movie offers are the reason why it has gained the following it has. For instance, each brother has a tattoo on their right index finger; one says Veritas and the other Aequitas. Truth and Justice branded on the vigilante’s trigger finger, his most valuable asset.
The two brothers make for perfect anti-heroes, and who doesn’t love a good anti-hero? They become Warriors of God on a vigilante mission. However, they are pursued by an eccentric detective, played by Willem Dafoe.
The dark humor involved is a breath of fresh air. Serious action movies – as great as they can be – have been done before, a lot. We follow the two brothers, who at the start of the movie have never killed anyone before, as they perfect their craft by practice. Other comic relief is provided by their friend, Rocco, played by David Della Rocco.
All in all, Boondock Saints is a movie worth watching.
