Dreamgirls
A radiant and lively film that will bring an audience to its feet.
With a dazzling cast and a drop-dead soundtrack, Dreamgirls is one of the best films of this year and last. The original Broadway musical graced NYC stages in the early ‘80s. Many claim the film is based loosely around the story of the singing group “The Supremes.” No one knows for certain, but undeniable coincidences pop up throughout the film.
Dreamgirls follows a group of three promising young singers who are faced with challenges of the harsh music biz. A break-out performance by former American Idol runner up, Jennifer Hudson, who plays lead singer Effie, will take your breath away. Her voice is like nothing we’ve heard in a long time, and her acting is a great match for that power-house sound. Hudson won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress, and Oscar buzz is beginning to heat up.
Beyoncé Knowles breaks barriers of the stereotype that pop singers can’t make good actresses (i.e., Britney Spears). Knowles is charming and brilliant as Deena, who replaces Effie as the lead singer when manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx) decides she’s a better fit to win over audiences. Jamie Foxx embodies his role very well, although he is outshined by the glittering ladies.
The third Dreamgirl is played by Anika Noni Rose, another talented and beautiful addition to the group. Add Eddie Murphy to the mixing pot as a James Brown-type singer who delves into drugs and ultimately destroys his life. Who knew Murphy could sing? His energetic passion will nearly bring moviegoers to their feet each time he performs. Murphy also won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor.
Don’t miss this one while it’s still in theaters. And just know that you’ll leave the theater and go directly to buy the soundtrack. These songs are addicting!
