Independence Day
Science Fiction classic from the 90s
In 1996, a movie was released that blew the minds of practically everyone who saw it. The movie was Independence Day, the science fiction classic of our generation, which solidified Will Smith’s place as a film actor. Independence Day has almost all of the staples needed in a great science fiction movie. It has aliens, action, computer stuff and the triumph of the human race.
It is the classic story of humans on the brink of extermination by a malicious race of aliens that come to Earth with only one thing in mind: annihilation. They are like locusts, who go from planet to planet consuming all of the natural resources before they move on.
The cast plays a huge role in this film’s success. Will Smith plays Captain Steven Hiller, the fearless air force pilot; Bill Pullman, the steadfast President that we all wish we really had. Also, Jeff Goldblum plays the computer genius that figures out the alien technology and plays an integral role in the fight against the aliens. And, who could forget Randy Quaid as the drunk that no one took seriously until it was too late.
The visual effects are fantastic and well done. However, the writing of the movie, by Dean Devlin and director Roland Emmerich, seemed much more striking. Even the best science fiction movies sometimes suffer the consequences of weak writing. The clearest and best example of the writing can be seen in the President’s powerful and even touching speech, just before the climactic air strike.
Of course, just like any action/science fiction movie, it has its instances of unrealistic scenes and bad jokes, but these are few and far between.
