Hook
What if Peter Pan grew up? Steven Spielberg’s Hook answers this question for audiences with a thrilling, imaginative tale full of warmth and humor. Robin Williams stars as the fully-grown Peter Pan, now known as Peter Banning. On a return visit to see Wendy (Maggie Smith), Peter finds that she has grown old, too old to return with him to Neverland. But his dismay is forgotten when he glimpses Wendy’s granddaughter, Moira. After seeing Moira, Peter decides that he is finally ready to grow up. Soon, he has forgotten who he was. But his peaceful, adult life is shattered when his children are kidnapped by Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman). With Tinkerbell’s (Julia Roberts) help, Peter returns to Neverland to battle for his children, but along the way, he must remember who he is and where he came from if he is to defeat his arch-enemy. Peter must rediscover the importance of friendship and imagination and learn to believe once more.
Hook is a wonderfully entertaining film for the whole family. Williams is delightful as cynical middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning. And Dustin Hoffman is excellent as Captain Hook. He brings the infamous pirate to life perfectly. The only thing is, this is an older film, made in 1991, and the special effects are clearly dated. And at times, the movie does come across as a bit preachy. Yet the energy, imagination, and heart of the story ensure that the film will remain a family favorite.
The special features are pretty skimpy: a few theatrical trailers and bios on the stars of the film.
