Circle of Friends
Circle of Friends, a truly charismatic film, is Minnie Driver’s breakout role onto the silver screen. Driver plays Benny, an overweight hopeless romantic. Her best friends Eve (Geraldine O’Rawe) and Nan (Saffron Burrows) join her on a search for love and self-discovery at school in Dublin.
Away from their small hometown’s watchful eyes, each girl pushes the limits of their devout Catholic upbringing. Aidan (Aiden Gillen), a fellow schoolmate, aims to corrupt Eve, an orphan raised by nuns. Nan lures the rich Simon Westward (Colin Firth) with careful scheming and her mature, fashionable persona. And Benny wins Jack Foley (Chris O’Donnell)—star athlete, heart-throb, and a medical student—proving a positive attitude can accomplish anything and beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Benny’s parents, however, wish her to marry Sean Walsh (Alan Cumming), a family friend, for the sake of the family business and financial security. Dublin life also threatens the girls’ friendship, as one friend’s desperate situation pushes her to almost unforgivable actions.
This film is the epitome of charming, with stellar performances from each cast member. The chemistry between the characters transforms the already witty and humorous dialogue into perfection. Perhaps the only drawback is the characters’ strong Irish accents that may, at times, be difficult to decipher. But despite being set in 1950s Ireland, this film is timeless.
Any man who’s been ready to move to the next level of his relationship with a woman, before she was, will relate to this film, and women will enjoy this film as a tale of true friendship, self-discovery, and romance that conquers seemingly insurmountable obstacles. You will be starry-eyed the rest of the day following this movie, with renewed hope that true love does exist in the world.
